Fly fishing for trout in Somerset East, Eastern Cape, South Africa

If you don't look too carefully, the veldt around Somerset East looks fantastic.  However, look a little closer, and you can see that we are still in the grips of the worst drought in 100 years, as the beautiful green grass is extremely short.  There is not much feed for the winter, and farmers are really struggling.  Despite this, the little bit of rain that we've had, has kept the water levels relatively constant.  This is the best time for trout, as they are a cold water species, but don't write off the yellowfish, they're still obliging!

Mountain Dam - Somerset East

The water level is still around 30%, and the weather is chilling down nicely.  Unfortunately with that comes wind, and this makes fishing at Mountain dam quite challenging.  Some members did brave the weather, and were rewarded with some good fish.

Buffelshoek - Little Fish River pools - Somerset East / Swaershoek

The Buffelshoek pools are still looking quite desperate, but despite this, are still fishing well. The Causeway and Krantz pools are still the one's to fish, as the other pools are struggling with the current water situation.

Buffelshoek dam - Somerset East / Swaershoek

The Buffelshoek dam is remains unfishable.

Glen Avon dams - Somerset East

The Glen Avon dams, outside Somerset East, have had a little reprieve from the drought. The water  levels at Vlei dam have been maintained, but Mill has dropped slightly.  Although the water is quite mirky, both waters are still producing fish. Grandfathers is still not fishable.

Angler & Antelope Private waters - Source of the Little Fish River - Somerset East

The pools of the Little Fish river have not really been fished this month, however, the water still looks good for fishing, and the lack of rod pressure just ensures that the trout grow a little more, without the stress of being caught and released.

Naude's River - Somerset East

The Naude's river is still flowing. The waterfall this month has been THE favourite spot.  This offers the most shelter from the wind, so most anglers decided to experience this beautiful spot.  They were all rewarded with wonderful catches.
