Water Report March 2010
Fly fishing for trout in Somerset East, Eastern Cape, South AfricaThe veldt surrounding Somerset East is looking much better, but the drought is still with us. Somerset East has had some rain, but despite the veldt looking better, the dams are still not full. All the levels have been maintained though, and the fishing is still fantastic.
Mountain Dam - Somerset East
The water level is still around 40% with two of the three fountains still feeding the dam, albeit slowly. With the evenings slightly cooler, there have been some wonderful evening rises on the dam, producing a good number of trout. Unfortunately the cold South Easter still makes its appearance on occasion, which makes the fish disappear.
Buffelshoek - Little Fish River pools - Somerset East / Swaershoek
The Buffelshoek pools are once again looking quite desperate, but despite this, one of the Bankberg Troutfishers Club members lost a monster just the other day in the Causeway pool. The legend lives on! The Causeway and Krantz pools are still the one's to fish, as the other pools are struggling with the current water situation.
Buffelshoek dam - Somerset East / Swaershoek
The Buffelshoek dam is currently not fishable.
Glen Avon dams - Somerset East
The Glen Avon dams, just outside Somerset East, have had a little reprieve from the drought. Mill dam is full again and fishable. Vlei dam has some water and can be fished as well. Grandfathers is not fishable.
Angler & Antelope Private waters - Source of the Little Fish River - Somerset East
The Azolla bloom is a thing of the past. The water is clear again, and fishing beautifully.
Naude's River - Somerset East
The Naude's river is still flowing, albeit not very fast. The waterfall remains a favourite spot with protection from both heat and wind. A good couple of trout have been caught and released here.
