Water Report January 2011

Fly fishing for trout in Somerset East, Eastern Cape, South Africa

Water reports have been scarce, as there has not been much to report.  We are by no means out of the woods as far as the drought is concerned, but there is definitely light at the end of the tunnel, with some nice soft drizzle helping the fountains and doing a world of good for the veldt.

Mountain Dam - Somerset East

The water level has come up about 1/2 m, so is now around 25 - 28% full.  It has been at around 20% for the last six months, with the fountains only just keeping up with the evapouration.  The fishing has been fantastic, with one member catching a 2 kg beauty.

Buffelshoek - Little Fish River pools - Somerset East / Swaershoek

The Buffelshoek pools have not been as fortunate as the waters to the east of the town.  The river has stopped flowing, and they desperately need some rain.

Glen Avon dams - Somerset East

The Glen Avon dams, outside Somerset East, seem to have benefitted the most from the little rain that we've had.  This obviously has to do with management of the water as much as the rain that has fallen.  Mill dam is now full.  Vlei dam is at 75% and Grandfathers at 50%.   With the dams being close to the town,  fishing is accessible to all.

Angler & Antelope Private waters - Source of the Little Fish River - Somerset East

The pools of the Little Fish river produced some good fish over the December holidays.  The trout are growing well, and are feisty.  These waters are in the same area as the Buffelshoek pools and as such have not had sufficient rain.  We're hoping that our normal February rains will improve the situation.

Naude's River - Somerset East

The Naude's river is still flowing. The waterfall is still a favourite spot, and with 2lb fish spotted, well worth the visit.
