Fly fishing for trout in Somerset East, Eastern Cape, South Africa

The veldt surrounding Somerset East is looking much better, but the drought is still with us. Somerset East has had some rain, but despite the veldt looking better, the dams are still not full. All the levels have been maintained though, and the fishing is still fantastic.

Mountain Dam - Somerset East

The water level is hovering between 30% and 40% with two of the three fountains still feeding the dam, albeit slowly. With the evenings slightly cooler, there have been some wonderful evening rises on the dam, producing a good number of trout. The weather is still surprisingly warm for this time of the year, so fishing the evening rise is very comfortable.

The Buffelshoek pools are still looking quite desperate, but despite this, are still fishing well. The Causeway and Krantz pools are still the one's to fish, as the other pools are struggling with the current water situation.
